I have been searching for information about my Grandfather Hugh Gilliam/Gillum Mother's family for many years. My Grandfather was born 13 July 1909 in Elliott County, Kentucky to John James (born March 1979 in Elliott Co. and died 11 Oct. 1958 in Logan Co.WV) and Rosa J. "Rosie" Ison (born Nov. 1879 in Elliott Co.Ky and died after 1909 in Elliott Co.Ky) Gillum/Gilliam. I know that Rosa died when my Grandfather Hugh was a young boy and that his Father took the family to West Virgina where he worked in the coal mines. I found Rosa in the census records with her parents whose names are Elliott and Rena Ison. I have no idea what Rena's maiden name is or anything about her family, where Rosa is buried and the only thing I know about Elliott Ison is he was born 17 May 1859 in Elliott Co. Ky and died before 1900 (at least he was not in the 1900 census with Rena)

My Father always said that his Father never spoke about his Mother and he felt it was because he really didn't remember her but my Father knew his Grandfather Gillum/Gilliam and his Dad's brother Merdi. I really would like to find more about the Ison family and if I find out more about my Gillum/Gilliam family that would be wonderful!

My Grandmother Gillum/Gilliam was Irene Fraley Gillum/Gilliam and I have much on the Fraley line and will share with anyone that might connect into this line. This line has been proven to Frederick Fraley that fought in the Revolutionary War.

Daniel Stephens/Stevens b 1815 Hawkins Co TN d aft. 1880 (probable Elliott Co KY) m abt 1834 Dorcas Manes/Manis b abt 1815 (probable Hawkins Co TN) d abt 1846. I have not located a marriage record for Daniel & Dorcas Stephens but believe this is the family listed in the 1840 Floyd Co KY census with three children under 10 years of age. I am unsure what happened to Dorcas, she may have died in childbirth.
In 1850, Daniel is remarried to Nancy (Stephens) and is listed on the Morgan Co KY census with children from his 1st marriage (James, Daniel, Stephen, Margaret, Amanda, Solomon) and a daughter from his present marriage (Charlotte). Some say this Nancy is the d/o John Stephens and Phoebe Runnels and others say her maiden name was Conley and previously married to a Stephens. One record shows her maiden name as Storey. Daniel and Nancy must have divorced as she is located on the 1860 Morgan Co KY census with children Solomon (Daniel & Dorcas son), Charlotte (Daniel & Nancy's daughter), Susan and Rebecca (Daniel & Nancy's children?).
Another child I have listed for Daniel Stephens, but no mother's name is Hamilton "Ham" Stephens. I found this many years ago on an index card at the Sandy Hook Genealogy Library when it was upstairs over the library. The card was filled out by a Lyman Barker and he stated that Hamilton Stephens was a brother to James G. Stephens. James G. was a s/o Daniel Stephens and Dorcas Manes/Manis.
In 1860, Daniel is listed on the Morgan Co KY census with 3rd wife Sarah (Dehart-Henson), 2 children from his 1st marriage (Stephen, Margaret), a son (John) from his present marriage with Sarah, and 3 children (Jane, Catherine, Martha Henson) from Sarah's previous marriage to Lewis Henson.
On the 1870 Elliott Co KY census, Daniel and Sarah are listed with Martha (Sarah & Lewis Henson's daughter ) and John (Daniel & Sarah's son).
I am having trouble determining if this is the correct Daniel on the 1880 Elliott Co KY census as he is listed with a Harriet as his wife and a daughter Rhoda age 15. I don't have a record of this marriage. Daniel Stephens must have died by 1900 as I was unable to locate him on the census. His 3rd wife Sarah died in 1878.
I believe that my Daniel may be the s/o James Stephens who was in early Hawkins Co TN records. There was an older James Stephens and Gilbert Stephens in early Morgan County records and living very close to Daniel. I believe Gilbert and James may have been brothers (or at the least, very close kin). Daniel named his first born son James Gilbert Stephens. The Gilbert Stephens line has been fairly well researched and they do not list a son named Daniel. I have seen several records online who list James as the father of Daniel, but none can provide any type of documentation - only the fact they lived close together. Not enough for me.........

Bennett and Sarah Jane (either Wells or Adkins)had two sons, Tilsman, b. 1886 and William Harrison b. 1889. Bennett's second wife was Emeline (Emmer) Adkins. Sarah was likely b.1867 and died after birth of youngest son, ca 1889. I would greatly appreciate any information on this 'brick wall'.

I am interested in finding informant on Minvera Jane Vansant, Flannery, Adkins. She was the daughter of Elizabeth "Betsey" Vansant from Tazewell County Virginia. She moved to Morgan County Kentucky and was later found in Elliott County after it formation. She traveled to Morgan with her mother and siblings. Her siblings were Nancy Vansant Bowling wife of Jared Bowling and William Henderson Vansant that married into the Hunter family. These families were all in Tazewell County Virginia. Her mother Elizabeth "Betsey" later married John Flannery who was the father in law of Minerva Jane Vansant. I have been trying for years to find out who her father was. This is my Flannery Vansant brick wall. The answer is out there somewhere and I feel if we keep asking something will help answer this mystery.
Thanks for any help in solving this.

Janet White

janesky74@yahoo.com

I was surfing and came across the website. I am wondering if there might be someone in that area that knows about is is related to the George and Eleanor NIckols line.

George and Elenor had had five or six children that i know about. At one time they lived in or around that area.

George was born about 1799 and in 1850 was in Morgan county. They were married in Fleming County. One of his son's was Andrew Jackson White and the one tht i am interested in is James that married Mary Emily Day.

I am trying to find out if there is any thing that would led me to the parents of George and his siblings. I live in Ohio and as yet have found nothing.

Jut in case someone is interested, some of the family surnames are NESBITT,, BARRACKS, PETTIT, RICHMOND, FOUCH, CLARK and many others including WHITE.

Thanks

Ruth

I am looking for information on my GG-grandfather William W. Evans and my GG-grandmother Martha Oney. Previous censuses showed Martha married to a William W. Fraley. Around 1880, a census showed her married to a William W. Evans. This census claimed that William W. Evans was born around 1834 in VA. However, I cannot seem to find any further information on William. Martha and William were the parents of my g-grandfather Elijah Horton Evans.

I was recently contacted by a gentleman in WV who is researching the Stephens line and wondered if he might be related to the Stephens in Elliott Co. I have been searching but so far no luck in matching his line with mine. I told him I would see if you might have something on file at the Historical Society on his family. Here is his line and how he thinks they fit into the STEPHENS of Morgan/Elliott Co.
John Beaver Stephens b abt 1810 (KY or VA per different records) s/o James & Polly Stephens(according to John's marriage records) m Bidsey Jackson in 1831 Cabell Co VA(present day Wayne Co WV).
Jesse Stephens b abt 1820 KY m 21 Feb 1842 Morgan Co KY to Winifred Henson b abt 1820 Clay Co KY. On his marriage license for a second marriage (Mary Polly Dalton Adkins) (maiden name Dalton, Mary was previously m to a Henry Adkins) Jesse listed his parents as James and Polly Stephens...the same as John Beaver. When Jesse and Mary married they were in their 60's and didn't have any children. Both were widows. At the time of the 1870 Census Jesse & Winnie had moved to Wayne Co, WV(from Morgan Co KY). This was where John Beaver Stephens was also living.
He believes his John Beaver Stephens of Wayne WV and the Jesse Stephens of Morgan Co KY are related, and possible sons of the older James Stephens who was on early Morgan Co KY census. This James was, I believe the same one who was in early 1800's Hawkins Co TN records and I also believe was the father of my Daniel Stephens.
Thanks Anita and please give my best to your mom and the other ladies at the society.
Jan

I too have reached a brick wall still again. I had an uncle named Stephen Tase Elliott (called Bud) who lived in Elliott County, Ky. He died around 1937-39 near Sandy Hook. He was found dead by my now deceased father in a field. Since Dad is not around to tell me anything more and I cannot find a death certificate or any news about Bud's death, I am simply at a lost. Rumor has it somebody was responsible for the death. I'm not out to get anyone into trouble, but I would like to find some paperwork about what was actually found. I have recently written a book about this and other difficult situations happening to my ancestors in Kentucky called "What 'Back Then' Was Like" and stories passed on by ancestors. Sold at Amazon.com If anyone has any information that would help, I'd appreciate it. Roger C. Elliott
