I have not located a marriage record for Daniel & Dorcas Stephens but believe this is the family listed in the 1840 Floyd Co KY census with three children under 10 years of age. I am unsure what happened to Dorcas, she may have died in childbirth.
In 1850, Daniel is remarried to Nancy (Stephens) and is listed on the Morgan Co KY census with children from his 1st marriage (James, Daniel, Stephen, Margaret, Amanda, Solomon) and a daughter from his present marriage (Charlotte). Some say this Nancy is the d/o John Stephens and Phoebe Runnels and others say her maiden name was Conley and previously married to a Stephens. One record shows her maiden name as Storey. Daniel and Nancy must have divorced as she is located on the 1860 Morgan Co KY census with children Solomon (Daniel & Dorcas son), Charlotte (Daniel & Nancy's daughter), Susan and Rebecca (Daniel & Nancy's children?).
Another child I have listed for Daniel Stephens, but no mother's name is Hamilton "Ham" Stephens. I found this many years ago on an index card at the Sandy Hook Genealogy Library when it was upstairs over the library. The card was filled out by a Lyman Barker and he stated that Hamilton Stephens was a brother to James G. Stephens. James G. was a s/o Daniel Stephens and Dorcas Manes/Manis.
In 1860, Daniel is listed on the Morgan Co KY census with 3rd wife Sarah (Dehart-Henson), 2 children from his 1st marriage (Stephen, Margaret), a son (John) from his present marriage with Sarah, and 3 children (Jane, Catherine, Martha Henson) from Sarah's previous marriage to Lewis Henson.
On the 1870 Elliott Co KY census, Daniel and Sarah are listed with Martha (Sarah & Lewis Henson's daughter ) and John (Daniel & Sarah's son).
I am having trouble determining if this is the correct Daniel on the 1880 Elliott Co KY census as he is listed with a Harriet as his wife and a daughter Rhoda age 15. I don't have a record of this marriage. Daniel Stephens must have died by 1900 as I was unable to locate him on the census. His 3rd wife Sarah died in 1878.
I believe that my Daniel may be the s/o James Stephens who was in early Hawkins Co TN records. There was an older James Stephens and Gilbert Stephens in early Morgan County records and living very close to Daniel. I believe Gilbert and James may have been brothers (or at the least, very close kin). Daniel named his first born son James Gilbert Stephens. The Gilbert Stephens line has been fairly well researched and they do not list a son named Daniel. I have seen several records online who list James as the father of Daniel, but none can provide any type of documentation - only the fact they lived close together. Not enough for me.........

E-mail: dlsuttles@roadrunner.com Message: I'm looking for information on Lilbern Haney married (1) Elizabeth Waggoner died in Elliott Co around 1880. He married (2) Julia Porter mother of my grandfather George Barnes Haney Born 1883 I can't seem to find any info on Julia . I did find Lilbern and Julia was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery in Rowan Co Ky any information is greatly apprciated . Thanks Debbie ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Rhea Evans Jan Bailey I was recently contacted by a gentleman in WV who is researching the Stephens line and wondered if he might be related to the Stephens in Elliott Co. I have been searching but so far no luck in matching his line with mine. I told him I would see if you might have something on file at the Historical Society on his family. Here is his line and how he thinks they fit into the STEPHENS of Morgan/Elliott Co.
John Beaver Stephens b abt 1810 (KY or VA per different records) s/o James & Polly Stephens(according to John's marriage records) m Bidsey Jackson in 1831 Cabell Co VA(present day Wayne Co WV).
Jesse Stephens b abt 1820 KY m 21 Feb 1842 Morgan Co KY to Winifred Henson b abt 1820 Clay Co KY. On his marriage license for a second marriage (Mary Polly Dalton Adkins) (maiden name Dalton, Mary was previously m to a Henry Adkins) Jesse listed his parents as James and Polly Stephens...the same as John Beaver. When Jesse and Mary married they were in their 60's and didn't have any children. Both were widows. At the time of the 1870 Census Jesse & Winnie had moved to Wayne Co, WV(from Morgan Co KY). This was where John Beaver Stephens was also living.
He believes his John Beaver Stephens of Wayne WV and the Jesse Stephens of Morgan Co KY are related, and possible sons of the older James Stephens who was on early Morgan Co KY census. This James was, I believe the same one who was in early 1800's Hawkins Co TN records and I also believe was the father of my Daniel Stephens.
Thanks Anita and please give my best to your mom and the other ladies at the society.
Jan
